- [Instructor] Getting into a competitive university is just that, competitive. Lots of people apply to these universities but universities only have so many available slots. The best students get into many top universities, so they have a choice of schools to choose from. Some folks don't get into their top choice, they get denial letters. But some students get a temporary denial with a chance to be accepted at a later time. These students are put on a waiting list. At every stage, universities are using statistics to make decisions. Universities establish a target class size, for example let's say they want 1,000 students. They'll use statistics from previous years to estimate how many students that have received acceptance letters will actually accept their offers and arrive on campus. This is referred to as the university's yield. If they have an 80% yield, they might accept 1,250 students, with the expectation that 80% will accept the offer, 1,000 students. And 20% will go to…
