- Sitting at the top of our OSI or TCP/IP models, we've got the application layer. Now, let's consider some common protocols that live at that application layer. And when we discuss these protocols, we want to identify them as either a TCP or a UDP protocol. Recall that TCP and UDP, they live at that transport layer. While TCP gives us reliable communication, UDP gives us unreliable communication. Now, what that means is unreliable communication doesn't make any effort to confirm that a transmission was successfully received. We also want to identify the port number used by each of those protocols. When we send a segment destined for a specific port, the receiving device, it knows what service we're trying to access. For example, maybe there's a server running both a web service and an email service. When we communicate with that server, using TCP port 80 as an example, we're saying that we want to access that…
