- [Instructor] Embedded systems often operate in unusual environments where traditional wired and wifi network connectivity isn't available. This might be in the far reaches of an industrial plant or even out in the field. We need specialized communication technology to assist in these situations. While wifi networking might not be available. Traditional cellular networks using 4G or 5G technology might still be available to fill the gap. Devices can be outfitted with cellular modems as either a built-in technology or as an add on, and then use the generally available cellular network to communicate. Devices using cellular communication will require a subscriber identity module or SIM card. SIM cards are often hardware cards that you insert into a cell phone or other cellular device to authenticate to the provider's network.
