- [Instructor] To understand the role of software engineering and data science, we need to first understand the differences and similarities between the two. We can analyze them from several perspectives. The first is to consider how we define their success criteria. Software engineering products need to guarantee 100% success. For example, an email system helps me send and receive emails, but let us say out of 100 emails I send, only 95 of them reach their destination and 5 get lost somewhere in transit. Will I call my email product successful? No way. It will be considered a failure and any customer would not want to use it. Now let us say that our email users are getting spam. We build a filter that starts blocking about 95% spam and 5% still get through. Will I consider the spam filter a failure? Not really. It may start with a low filtering percentage, but over time, it will learn more about spam and start…
