- [Narrator] Data security is a complex problem and many different people throughout the organization play a role in protecting information. Let's take a look at some of the important concepts surrounding data ownership and stewardship. Data controllers are the entities who determine the reasons for processing personal information and direct the methods of processing that data. This term is used primarily in European law and it serves as a substitute for the term data owner to avoid a presumption that anyone who collects data has an ownership interest in that data. Data processors are service providers who process personal information on behalf of a data controller. For example, a credit card processing service might be a data processor for a retailer. The retailer retains responsibility as the data controller, but it uses the service as a data processor. Within these organizations, individuals often hold varying roles…
