- [Instructor] In OSN, we're mostly dealing with public information, so breaking laws typically isn't a concern. The data we're collecting during OSN is freely available and can be used to help people and organizations find where they're exposing vulnerabilities. But just because the data is available doesn't mean you have free range to do whatever you want. You're still doing a job and held to a high ethical standard. So use good judgment and common sense. The security community is very small and word gets around fast. Remaining ethical and having due diligence with the data you collect will ensure you have a good reputation in the community and with potential clients. If you find information that you think might not be publicly accessible or might be outside the scope of the engagement, or just makes you feel weird, take a step back and assess the situation. And when in doubt, check with an attorney.
