Epidemiology

- [Eddie] Disease is a constant threat to humans. Historically, diseases like the plague, cholera, smallpox, and the measles, have swept through different parts of the world and killed large numbers of people in a relatively short period of time. In more recent times, we've seen mass outbreaks of HIV/AIDS and Ebola. And throughout time it seems that influenza has killed millions. The famed Spanish flu alone killed approximately 75 million people worldwide between 1918 and 1920. When dangerous disease spreads quickly we often refer to it as an epidemic. In times like this we count on epidemiologists, specialists in analyzing data, to see what may be causing the epidemic, and how to stop the disease, in addition to finding ways to prevent future outbreaks. In order to find the origin of the disease, how it is transmitted, and then isolating effective treatments, epidemiologists must have some knowledge of public health, medicine, and biology.
