FTC privacy enforcement actions

- The FTC regularly brings enforcement actions against businesses who engage in practices that the commission finds are either unfair or deceptive, from a privacy perspective. As I've mentioned several times in this course, the United States does not have a comprehensive privacy law, that mandates the broad protection of personally identifiable information. However, most companies now take it upon themselves to publish a written privacy policy, that describes the types of personal information that they collect, and their practices around the retention and use of that information. These privacy policies provide the FTC with the ability to initiate enforcement actions. The FTC does this under the portion of their authority that allows them to investigate and regulate deceptive business practices.
