Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act

- [Instructor] The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, introduced privacy protections for student educational records that are maintained by any educational institution that receives federal funding through the U.S. Department of Education. FERPA made big headlines in 2019, when Michael Cohen revealed in congressional testimony, that he had sent a letter to Fordham University threatening them with legal action under FERPA if they disclosed any of Donald Trumps academic records. This was probably the most high profile invocation of FERPA in the law's 40 plus year history. FERPA applies to most educational institutions in the United States. Almost all colleges and universities receive some federal funding through Department of Education programs. So FERPA generally applies to colleges and universities.
