- [Scott] FreeNAS is a free operating system based on FreeBSD, designed to provide NAS, or network-attached storage, for network clients. It also offers many other features, including the ability to run useful plugins and to host jails and virtual machines to run processes or operating systems in a protected space. FreeNAS relies on ZFS to manage storage. And in this course, we'll take a look at the basics of that technology. Whether you need to set up storage in an enterprise context or for a home lab or a home media server, FreeNAS is a good choice. FreeNAS kind of sits in between a storage appliance, like a Synology or Drobo, where pretty much everything is automatic, and a manually configured system, where you have to set up everything from scratch. We'll interact with FreeNAS through its web interface and take a look at managing storage in the console interface as well. Storage is a critical component, and storage management is a useful skill for all levels of IT professionals.
