- [Tutor] Other privacy laws like the General Data Protection Regulation or GDPR, existed before CCPA. So you might be asking yourself, why not just use those instead? You'll notice there are lots of privacy regulations coming from many different countries and each one will often leverage the good parts of other regulations. CCPA definitely used some of the GDPR principles to guide it. There are some of you that will need to understand and comply with both CCPA and GDPR. However, there will be some of you that will only have to comply with CCPA and others that will only have to comply to GDPR. Understanding the differences will help you keep them separate when necessary and where you can leverage their commonalities. GDPR is a European Union law that came into effect in May, 2018.
