HITECH
- [Instructor] The Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health, or HITECH, Act passed in 2009 with the intent of modernizing healthcare. The most significant provision of the HITECH Act was providing strong incentives for the use of electronic health records, or EHRs, throughout the medical community. The HITECH Act provided direct financial payments to health providers who demonstrated meaningful use of EHRs and introduced penalties for those who did not adopt the new technology. HITECH also contained provisions that updated the privacy and security requirements of HIPAA. The first of these was a set of requirements that covered entities must follow when they experience a data breach. Within 60 days of discovering a breach, covered entities must mail a notice to all affected individuals explaining the circumstances of the breach and recommending actions that individuals should take to protect…
