- [Instructor] While the design of classless inner domain routing and IPV6 certainly helped to prevent major issues with IP addressing, a big one really did still remain. And this was the size of the internet routing table. With individual entries for each and every sub network in the internet, the routing table was growing immensely. This was a constant concern when it came to the performance and also the resources that needed to be installed in these internet routers. We can combat this problem using route aggregation. Route aggregation is also sometimes called route summarization. Using this approach, we use a subnet mask that is shorter in order to summarize a large group of systems. It's interesting because we're used to extending the subnet mask or extending the prefix length when we sub-net but here we're doing the opposite. We're taking the subnet mask and making it shorter.
