- [Narrator] In the early nineties three main problems with IP addressing were identified. First, the IP address space for the public was beginning to become very short supply. Especially that Class B address space. Second, the 32 bit address making up an IP address really started to look inadequate. And third, the size of the routing table for the internet, was growing so big as it was really starting to cause major problems. A group of really smart engineers were assigned to solve these issues. And they came up with something called Classless Inner-Domain Routing, or CIDR. And we love to pronounce that simply CIDR. CIDR was brought to the forefront to deal with the IP address issue, the shortage. And the size of the internet routing table. As far as 32 bits go being inadequate for an IP address, IPv6 was proposed as a fix for that second problem. So CIDR marked the end of the classful system of IP addressing.…
