Introducing DHCP

- [Instructor] The Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol or DHCP has been a popular method of IP address assignment for a very long time. DHCP uses the client server concept. An end user device is a classic example of a client while a Linux or Windows server is a classic example of a server. The basic operation of this service is simple. A client joins the network and lacks the IP address information it needs as there's been no manual configuration of an IP address and the client is set to use DHCP. The client broadcasts for a DHCP server. The DHCP server responds and provides required information like the IP address, the subnet mask, the default gateway, and the DNS server addresses. When we look more closely at the DHCP process, it is actually a four-step process that is famously referred to as the DORA process. In step one, the client broadcasts a DHCP discover message.
