Introducing domain names and DNS discovery
- [Instructor] Domain name systems, or DNS for short, is essentially the phone book of the internet. Us humans browse the internet through domain names like linkedin.com, while computers use IP addresses to find the devices they're looking for on the internet. Similar to how your smartphone has contacts containing people's names and corresponding phone numbers, DNS translates domain names to IP addresses so that our browsers can load the websites we want to visit, rather than requiring us to memorize IP addresses. DNS reconnaissance is an important technical part of OSINT, because each organization that owns a domain name will need to provide DNS records to a name server if they want their website or email to be functional on the internet. If you were to buy the domain name example.com, and wanted customers to be able to visit your website at www.example.com, you'd need to provide your name server with an A record so that…
