- [Instructor] Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, computers started populating offices, industry, and government organizations. It soon became apparent it was necessary to protect data in some way from prying eyes. In the 1970s, any type of data encryption was largely done only in the government. And then in 1973, a scientists working for IBM, Horst Feistel, developed the Feistel cipher. So we'll take a look at the Feistel cipher. I'm here at this webpage, and I'll scroll down and I just want you to take a look at this. Now it's a block cipher, and you see over here this is the left side. This is the right side. And you're going to see some switching of these two blocks. And why I'm showing you this is it's important that you understand while you may think that encryption is complex, encrypting data needs to be elegant and simple.
