Jails, virtual machines, and plugins
- [Instructor] FreeNAS offers the ability to run software and operating systems in protected separate spaces. The two primary categories for creating protected spaces are jails and virtual machines. Jails use a host system's kernel and provide an isolated environment for services or processes to run. Jails can be granted access to disk paths, network resources, and other system elements, and the users and groups that exist inside of them are independent from other jails and from the system. If you're familiar with containers, jails are a very similar idea. On FreeNAS jails are managed by iocage which if you create jails will need some storage space on a pool. Plugins on FreeNAS run in jails and we can also create our own jails for custom services. The plugin section of web interface lists installers for common and useful software packages which can installed in their own jails to add functionality to the system.…
