- [Instructor] Lyme disease is caused by bacteria transmitted via infected black-legged deer ticks. In the short run, it causes a rash and fever, but down the road, it could cause a number of other symptoms like joint pain, or neurological problems. The first documented case was in the 1970s, and while the disease is mostly concentrated in the Northeast of North America, cases are being seen on other continents, too, especially Europe. A relatively new disease that seems to continue to spread. This is why statistics are so important in understanding, tracking, and fighting this disease. In the United States, the epicenter of Lyme disease, the Center for Disease Control, the CDC, tracks and shares Lyme disease data with doctors and the general public. The CDC site contains annual data and the number of cases reported. The demographics of those with the disease, and the location of those cases.
