Planning a VPN solution

for users or for an organization there are a number of factors to keep in mind and some decisions you need to make. The logical place to start is to think about what you need to accomplish that wouldn't otherwise work without VPN. Do remote workers need access to a database server in the main office need to be able to send documents to a printer in the New York office? Do employee laptops need to check in with a central configuration server to report back and receive new configuration information? Should all of the internet traffic from all of the branch offices flow through your main proxy and firewall? What you need to accomplish will inform the decisions you make in terms of architecture, bandwidth, security and protocols. It'll tell you whether you need a site-to-site VPN or a client-to-network VPN. And it'll tell you if you need a routed or bridged configuration.
