- [Instructor] Penetration testing is an important component of the cybersecurity professional's toolkit. Penetration tests provide an attacker's eye view on an organization's systems, networks, and applications. During a penetration test, the attacker goes beyond basic vulnerability testing, and reaches out to interact with systems and actually attempts to exploit the vulnerabilities that those systems contain. Unlike highly-automated vulnerability scanning, penetration tests are very manually-focused efforts, and involve careful design by human testers seeking to find and exploit security vulnerabilities. Because of their manual nature, penetration tests are more expensive and time consuming than other testing techniques.
