- [Instructor] I know we're here for some technical training, but I want to take a minute and remind you that data mining, like basically everything else, takes place in a human social context. It's important to respect the people who provided the data, or who will benefit from your work. And there are a few important dimensions to that respect. The first important issue is privacy, which affects how you gather data, how you store data, and what you share. This is both an issue of good manners, and as it happened, several major laws. For instance, in the European Union, there's the GDPR, that's the General Data Protection Regulation. In California, there's the California Consumer Privacy Act, or CCPA. In the U.S., there's also, at the federal level, HIPAA, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, which is going to affect health records.
