- [Instructor] There are both pros and cons of active reconnaissance and passive reconnaissance. There are certain times when I prefer active reconnaissance and other scenarios where I prefer passive reconnaissance. Ultimately, it comes down to my goals and objectives during the reconnaissance phase of the engagement. I have to ask myself, the priority is to get accurate information quickly, or is it to be stealthy and not get detected by the defensive security team? Typically, when I work with the stakeholder, we both agree on active reconnaissance as the preferred method of hosting because I get more information quickly and move on to other phases of the attack. Many of the hosting activities that I performed during active reconnaissance can be detected.
