- [Narrator] While most reverse engineering efforts focus on software, it is also possible to conduct reverse engineering of hardware, although this work requires advanced skills and sophisticated equipment. The reason that reverse engineering hardware is difficult is that the logic used to control hardware is buried inside of integrated circuits and firmware modules that are difficult to analyze without specialized instruments. The most common place to find hardware reverse engineering is when companies seek to determine how a competitor's product works. They purchase the product and then take it apart, subjecting it to engineering analysis that attempts to determine how the product functions. This knowledge may help the competitor develop similar products and gain an advantage over other firms.
