- [Instructor] Well, it's not generally thought of as a VPN protocol. SSH or Secure Shell can provide similar functionality to VPN. Using only an SSH server and SSH client software. SSH typically runs on TCP port 22, but it can be moved to other ports, if needed. Using SSH, a user can set up a tunnel from a port on a remote server to a local port allowing secure access to a particular service or they can set up a local port, which they use as a proxy server, which enables them to send web traffic through the proxy through an SSH connection, and to the remote network or out to the internet. In either case, SSH encapsulates the traffic securely and sends it through to the destination host. An SSH tunnel doesn't actually set up a virtual network interface, though, like most of the other VPNs do. The endpoint it provides is a port on the local machine rather than a separate IP.
