- [Instructor] An important part of understanding probability is understanding something called the sample space. Probability tells us the odds of certain outcomes. Sample space is a listing of all the possible outcomes. For example, perhaps we want to know the odds of roiling a six with a six-sided die. To calculate the probability we first need to list all of the possible outcomes. Here we have six outcomes. This is our sample space. We want one single outcome, a six. There are six outcomes in our sample space. Odds of roiling a six are one in six, 16.7%. In this case, finding the sample space is easy, but what happens when the outcomes become more complex? Suppose we have two dice, each with six sides. What would be our sample space now? Let's roll one die first. There are six possible outcomes.
