Scams targeting home workers
- [Instructor] At the beginning of the coronavirus outbreak, most people who worked for most companies were sent home to work remotely. And for scammers, this presented a rich opportunity to target people who felt scattered, stressed, distracted, and whose defenses might be down. It was a safe bet for a scammer with a list of company email addresses and even personal email addresses to target those people with phishing attempts or other attacks on the topic of either the coronavirus or the topic of working from home. One common strategy was to send emails to victims talking about mandatory training, about reimbursement programs for home office gear, or even posing as an IT department offering help setting up work gear at home. Phone calls were used for the same thing.
