- [Instructor] Today, most of what we do involves wireless communications. An insecure home router can allow others to spy on you and obtain sensitive information, so it's best to secure your wireless communications. Let's talk about how wireless transmissions work. In your home, your router, also called an access point, functions as a connection between you and an existing network, most likely your internet service provider. To identify your router, there is a service set identifier, or network name, and a wireless station, such as a laptop or your phone, communicates with other stations using the protocol 802.11, also known as Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi has several versions. For example, you might see them referred to in the following manner, Wi-Fi 4, which is 802.11n, Wi-Fi 5, which is 802.11ac, and Wi-Fi 6, which is 802.11ax.
