Server failover clusters

- [Instructor] The ultimate protection against downtime is provided by a technology called a failover cluster. A failover cluster is made up of two or more physical servers called nodes and a pool of shared storage. The storage resource typically involves a redundant array of independent disks or raid to avoid a single point of failure there. But since there's only a single pool of storage shared by each server in the cluster, there's only one set of database files. This means the synchronization problem that's present in other approaches to high availability is entirely avoided. One of the servers in the cluster is designated as the active node and every other server runs in a passive mode. Because there's only one set of database files, only the active node can write to them. When users connect to the cluster, their requests are directed to the currently active node.
