- [Narrator] The most common technique for ensuring databases are highly available is to create a duplicate server called a standby. A standby server duplicates the hardware of your primary database server. If the primary server fails and goes down, the standby server gets promoted to the role of the primary server. And it takes over the responsibilities of maintaining the RDBMS. For the most effective standby, It's important that they're as identical as possible. So they're built from the same physical components, using the same brands and capacities. This will minimize the possibility of encountering conflicts during the transition period.
