- [Narrator] In many countries, hunting is regulated by the government. In order to hunt, you may need a hunting license. In part, this is used as a way to promote safe hunting. In some cases, issuing hunting licenses helps raise tax revenue for the state. Since too many animals of one species might endanger plants, other animals, and humans, hunting is also seen as a way of controlling the animal population. So, yes, hunting is a numbers game. And you guessed it, statistics play an important role in regulating hunting and preserving our environment. For example, before hunting licenses can be issued for deer, regulators must know how many deer are in the region. Sampling and basic statistics are often used to estimate the deer population. In addition, past hunting data might be used by regulators to estimate how many deer will be killed per license issued. Suppose regulators estimate there are 5,000 deer in a region.
