Substance use disorder patient records

- [Instructor] Patients undergoing treatment for substance abuse are among the most vulnerable patients that interact with the healthcare community. In the 1970s, Congress passed a series of laws that regulated the privacy of these records in an effort to encourage individuals to seek treatment when required. The major federal regulation covering these records is the Confidentiality of Substance Use Disorder Patient Records rule, which appears in Part 2 of Title 42 of the Code of Federal Regulations. The rule applies to any information related to alcohol and substance abuse treatment programs that could be used to directly or indirectly identify a patient. The rule also restricts the use of information that could lead to criminal charges against an individual. The rule applies to any substance abuse program that receives federal funding, whether it is an independent facility or part of a larger healthcare provider.…
