Telemarketing privacy
- [Instructor] Nobody enjoys having their day interrupted by telemarketers. It's annoying to receive an unsolicited telephone call or text message, and a flurry of these undesirable calls over the years resulted in Congress passing legislation to regulate telemarketing activity. In 1991, Congress passed the Telephone Consumer Protection Act, or TCPA. This law gave the Federal Communications Commission authority to regulate unsolicited advertising by telephone and fax. Congress followed this with a series of other laws that further regulated this activity, and also granted some authority to the Federal Trade Commission. In 1995, the FTC issued their Telemarketing Sales Rule, which has been revised many times over the intervening years.
