- [Instructor] Phone numbers play a key role in social engineering and OSINT. Once upon a time, during a network penetration test engagement, I discovered a web login page for my target's digital phone system. I was surprised to see that all I needed to gain access to the employee's voicemail messages and contacts was a valid three-digit extension and corresponding four-digit PIN number. My next task was to obtain phone numbers and extensions for employees within the target organization. If I was able to use OSINT to gather phone numbers and extensions, guessing the four-digit PIN for each extension would be fairly easy. So I went to work using some techniques to gather phone numbers for the organization and its employees.
