- [Instructor] The Video Privacy Protection Act of 1988 is a law that prohibits the wrongful disclosure of videotape rental or sales records. The text of the law dates back to an era long before modern video streaming services, but the provisions of the law still affect those services. I'll get to that in a moment, but let's first look at what the law requires. The Video Privacy Protection Act prohibits disclosing personal information about video service customers, except under certain circumstances. Disclosure is always permitted to the consumer themselves or with the informed, written consent of the consumer. Disclosure is also permitted based upon a warrant or court order or when a disclosure is necessary to carry out the normal business of the provider.
