- [Instructor] One of the most frustrating topics in Word is tabs, but it need not be so. All you need to know are two items. The tab, which is a character, and the tab stop, which is a format. The tab stop sets the width of the tab character, its stretch across the page. It also controls the text alignment, or what happens to text after you type the tab character. The text can continue marching to the right, can go to the left, it can be centered, or a variety of options. This versatility is wonderful, but it doesn't make understanding tab stops any easier. Tab stops can be set in two locations, on the ruler, which is graphic and fun and visual, or in the Tabs dialog box, which isn't easy to get to, and, well it's nerdy. But it's more precise. The goal of setting a tab stop is to line up text evenly on a page. And here you see how not to do things. Spaces are used to line up text. Now, it may look okay, but…
