- [Instructor] Americans love their pets. All sorts of pets, cats and dogs, fish, birds, and reptiles, as well as some other less common creatures. It's estimated that about 67% of US households own at least one pet, that's about 85 million homes. As you can see, over 63 million homes have at least one dog, and nearly 43 million homes have at least one cat, and the list also contains a number of other animals, animals that range from tiny to enormous. But while 63.4 million homes have at least one dog, the average dog owner has about 1.6 dogs. The average cat owner has 1.8 cats, and the average horse owner has 2.1 horses. Pet owners love their pets, and want to ensure that their pets are happy and healthy, which means trips to the vet. Dog owners make an average of 2.4 trips to the vet each year.
