The one percent

- [Narrator] In December 2007, a recession hit the US economy. Many Americans struggled financially for the years that followed, but not the one percenters. This was the name given to the very wealthiest people in the United States, the top 1% wealthiest people in the United States. While it sounds like a simple concept, it has been calculated and interpreted a number of ways. 1% is easy enough to understand, the top person of a group of 100 or the top 10,000 of a group of one million, but the top 1% of what? Even though it is discussed as the 1% wealthiest people in the US, often it's interpreted as the top 1% earners. Let's move forward into this decade. In 2016, about 170 million Americans earned wages. To be in the top 1%, you would need to be among the top 1.7 million wage earners. The folks in the top 1% earned at least $300,000 in 2016.
