Create a monogram using Shape Builder

- [Instructor] In this movie, I'm going to create a monogram from these two letters, which are in the typeface Adobe Jenson Pro. I'll need to outline the text, tap Done, double tap on the S, holding down my modifier now. I'll move the S closer to the R. Let's zoom in. I'm going to switch from a fill to a stroke so that I can evaluate how these two characters are joining. Now with both selected, I'll come to Combine Shapes and choose the Shape Builder. I'll now just drag over the overlap to remove it. I can do the same right here. And for the portion of the S that goes outside of the R, to subtract that, I'll hold down my Touch Modifier and just swipe over it. Almost inevitably, you're going to end up with some bumps along the way, as I see right here. So I'm going to try and fix those now by switching to my Direct Selection tool. I'll tap away and then come and select this path right here, which seems to be a bit of a problem, and convert that to a curve. And I'll do the same thing down here. I just need to make sure I don't make things worse here, which I fear I may have done. So there may be a need for a little bit of extra cleanup there. But I want to now just select the whole shape and move it just to make sure there's no trace of the original outline left beneath. And I'll now switch back to a filled shape. So that's how we can create a monogram using the Shape Builder tool.
