(machine whirring) - [Instructor] Welcome to Drawing Vector Graphics Laboratory. I received a question that asked, "How do you create and draw with patterns in Illustrator?" So in this movie, we're going to get retro and replicate old-school zip tone methods by creating the same effect using patterns and the pencil tool. So let's get started. This is going to be a fun one. So when I went to art school, and yes, this is dating me. You can do the math, figure out my age. I graduated from art school in 1986. Now, in 1986, the high-tech method for doing kind of half-toning on a graphic, mind you, this was before desktop publishing. Apple was around, but it still hadn't made an appearance on desktop publishing for the design marketplace. So what you see here is how you would get precise typography.
