- Only fairly recently released freeform gradients are amazing. They use small bit of artificial intelligence, once you first invoke them, and then you can mix them in ways that would be nearly impossible, or at the very least incredibly time consuming, if you did them with linear and radial gradients. What I'm going to do here is select this blue rectangle at the back here, everything else is on another layer, so we can't have that. And then I'm going to tap the period key on my keyboard to start off a gradient. So we've already met our friends the linear and the radial gradients here, but this is the button for a freeform gradient. When you click it, it takes a moment or two while Illustrator analyzes the content. And it actually starts out in points mode.
