Mastering the Shape Builder tool
- [Instructor] Up until now, we've seen that the Pathfinder is your best choice for merging or cutting out shapes. But when you're dealing with shapes that need both merging and cutting, you're sometimes better off using the Shape Builder tool instead. Let's take a look. Here inside of Adobe Illustrator, I'm working on three separate icons for different tools, and I have shapes here that need to be cut, and I have other shapes here that need to be merged. So what I can do is I could probably work on these shapes here using the Pathfinder one by one, or I can start using the Shape Builder tool, which is located here in my Tools panel. Let me show you how it works. First, you select all of the objects where you would like to have some kind of an interaction. As you can clearly see, we can see all of the overlapping areas. And now it's just a matter of using my imagination to try and form the shape of a hammer. So…
