Targeting objects using layers

- [Instructor] The Layers panel does have one extra function beyond organization and that's that it can help you with selection. And it comes also to one of my very few real criticisms about Illustrator, because this is not terribly discoverable. Quite often when people are working on a layer, and I'll choose here the planets layer in this illustration, they go ahead and they select something and in the Layers panel, they see this small dot. And what I'm going to do here, temporarily, is just change the color of this, so it's easier for you to see. They see this small dot, and they think it just means that the layer is targeted. Actually, that's partially true, but this area can also be used to select content. Its technical name is the proxy region and InDesign, when they adopted the same layer structure, more or less, as Illustrator, they put a small box there to encourage you to click on it.
