- You've seen what a powerful drawing program Illustrator can be, and truth be told, you haven't seen anything yet. But Illustrator is also amazingly well suited to creating and formatting type, especially display type. By which I mean a few words of presumably large type designed with the intention of getting a large amount of attention in a brief amount of time. Here's one such single page example, laid out using what is known as a variable font, which means that you can change its appearance, its weight, think bold, it's width, think condensed, it's slant, think italic, with such precise control that if this were a standard font, it would offer more than a million style variations. Yes, I said a million. Not regular, italic, bold, and bold italic, that would be four style variations, but more than a million, specifically in the case of this font, assuming I've done my math right, 1,110,186 style variations.
