Using symbols
- [Instructor] When you have elements that repeat in several areas of your artwork, symbols make it easy to edit multiple instances of the symbol later on. Using the Selection tool, select the artwork that you want to become a symbol. Open the Symbols panel by choosing Window, Symbols. Drag the selected artwork and drop it onto the Symbols panel. Enter a name for your symbol in the Symbol Options dialog box. Leave the settings at their default and click OK. The artwork is converted to a symbol instance that is connected to the symbol. Drag as many symbol instances from the Symbols panel as you need. To scale a symbol, hold down the Shift key as you drag one of the corner handles to resize the artwork proportionately. Double-click on the symbol in the Symbols panel to go into Symbol Editing mode to edit the symbol instance. I'm going to change the color of this artwork.
