What is laser cutting?
- [Instructor] In the world of manufacturing, there are many different ways to subtractively shape material. Cutting, as a type of shaping, can be done in many ways. With the power of CNC, computer numerical control, projects designed in 2D or 3D computer programs, like Illustrator and Rhino, can be shaped in real life. The laser cutter combines the control and precision of computer guided cutting with fire. Laser cutting technology utilizes highly focused beams of light, aka lasers, to do a controlled burn through work material. The laser beam follows plans from completed designs called G-code, which create the cutting path. This is the manufacturing equal to using a hand held magnifying glass to direct sunlight. In this case, the source of the light is contained in the machine and precise mirrors intensify and direct the light through the final lens.
