- [Instructor] Let's identify the different parts of a grid. So I have a two-page layout here, facing pages, left page next to right-hand page. And we can see that if we look at the pages panel. Currently, my guides are turned off. I'll turn them on by pressing w, and when I do so, in addition to seeing the red bleed guide outside of the page area, we see the column and margin guides which indicate my type area. Now, it's a personal preference that I like to have this set to just a single column, and then have my subdivisions on a separate layout, which is why we see just a single column defining the type area. And what exactly do I mean by the type area? Let's come to the layers panel and I can turn on this hidden layer. The type area is the area inside the margins. You'll note that the folios, the page numbers and magazine name actually go outside of the type area, as in this case does part of this picture on the left-hand page. Now, working in tandem with this we have the layout grid which I've chosen to put on a separate layer so that I can turn it on and off as needed. In this case, the grid has twelve columns and it has eight rows. In addition, I can turn on a baseline grid. The baseline grid is an incremented ruling to which I can align the baselines of my type. I can turn on the baseline grid here, in my viewing options or under my view menu. So my layout grid will define rows, and as I said I have eight of them, and columns. In this case, we see a block of four columns. And in all cases, my text will run in a multiple of that twelve column subdivision. Between the rows and columns, we have the gutter spaces, and together the rows and columns define the grid fields. And these grid fields have what are known as active corners, and typically when you're aligning content to a grid field, you align it to the top left-hand corner.
