Page size and aspect ratio

- [Instructor] One of the first and most important design decisions you'll make is the size and orientation of your page. Typically, printed pages are vertical, while screens are more suited to a horizontal orientation. The aspect ratio, the ratio of the width the the height, is an important factor in determining how the space of your page, or screen, can be divided. You can determine the aspect ratio by dividing the longest side by the shortest side. So for example, a six by 10 page, gives an aspect ratio of one to 1.6, 10 divided by six. That's also referred to as a golden section aspect ratio. A U.S. letter size page, eight and 1/2 by 11 inches, is in an aspect ratio of one to 1.29. It's European equivalent A4, is in an aspect ratio of one to 1.4. A common page size of six inches by nine inches is in an aspect ratio of one to 1.5. These numbers are often rounded up, so that's also expressed as 2:3, or 4:6, or 8:12. A common U.S. magazine size of eight and 3/8 inch by 10 7/8 of an…
