- [Instructor] The main task of a drop cap is to draw the eye to the beginning of a paragraph, right? But they can also be used as a kind of an illumination, like a graphic. Now you probably know how to make a drop cap already. You simply switch to the type tool, place your cursor inside the paragraph, make sure the control panel is set to paragraph mode and then change the drop cap setting over here. I'm going to set this to six lines. There's our drop cap. But, sometimes you want your drop cap to stand out even more. Like, give it some kind of a special effect. For example, what if we wanted to put a drop shadow behind the drop cap? Well, InDesign won't let you apply a transparency effect to one character inside of a frame. But you can get around that limitation by selecting that character with the type tool, going to the type menu and choosing create outlines. That converts it into an in-line or anchored object.…
