Update an existing document

- [Instructor] Once you've published a document using Publish Online, there's a very good chance that at some point you're going to want to update that document, make some kind of edit, whether it's correcting a typo, changing a link or just tweaking the file a bit. And if you've already shared or distributed the URL for this published document, you certainly don't want that URL to change. Fortunately, we have the option to update an existing published document. Let me show you how that works. Let's go back to InDesign. Now I'm going to make a change to this document. Let's say I'll change the subhead here. I'll change it from City of Angels to Land of fun. There we go. Now I've already distributed the URL for this, but I want to republish it with this correction. So let's go to our Publish Online button. And here instead of choosing Publish New Document I'm going to select Update Existing Document. When I choose that I get a menu of all the documents I've ever published. They're in order from the most recently published to the oldest. I've got quite a few documents here, but I want to replace this one, Tour Los Angeles. When I choose the document the cover thumbnail shows here, the title here, and the original publishing date is here. If I'm not 100% sure this is the right document, and believe me it's easy to get multiple copies of the same document, especially if you forget to update existing. If you're not 100% sure this is the right document you can always click on the view button and that'll open this document in your browser and ensure that you have the right one to update. So now we're all set to republish this document. I'll click the Publish button and InDesign gives me one more chance to make sure that indeed I want to update the existing link with this document. I'll click OK. Once the document is published we can now view it. Let's take a look. And there's our change. Now Los Angeles is the land of fun. My audience won't have a different URL to go to, they'll go back to the URL that they always have and they'll see this change. This simple option in Publish Online makes it easy to make changes in your document and update the published document without changing your original URL.
